Do you know an unsung hero who has gone the extra mile to make your university experience exceptional? Cambridge SU is once again rolling out the red carpet to celebrate these absolute legends through our annual
Students' Awards.
Why These Awards Matter
University life is more than just essays and lectures (even if our Directors of Studies might disagree). Some of the most meaningful moments happen outside the library—whether in student activism, societies, welfare work, or just bringing people together.
During my time as a student, I threw myself into everything. I was an academic rep, society comms officer, JCR member, and even a rather hopeless but enthusiastic 7-seat in my novice boat. Why? Because I loved making university life better for everyone around me. Now, it’s time to celebrate the incredible students who dedicate their time and energy to others, while expecting nothing in return. These awards shine a spotlight on those who have gone above and beyond to make our time here richer, more inclusive, and more exciting.
Standout Winners from Previous Years:
- Event of the Year 2024 – Watersprite Film Festival
The world’s largest student film festival took home the award in 2024. The committee pulled off an incredible weekend of free screenings, panels, and events, all live-streamed for global audiences. With over 21,000 attendees from 79 countries and 36 films showcased from 1,750 entries across 93 countries, Watersprite’s commitment to accessibility and inclusion makes them a truly deserving winner.
- Society of the Year 2023 – African Caribbean Society (ACS)
ACS was recognised for its welcoming community and tireless access work, ensuring that students of African and Caribbean heritage feel at home in Cambridge. Their packed calendar of events—from games nights and Christmas formals to a University Challenge night and collaborations with Oxford—has made a huge impact on students’ experiences.
- Outstanding Contribution to University Life 2024 – Beth Doherty
Beth’s relentless work with KCSU (King’s College Students’ Union) earned them this award. From spearheading the King’s rent strike to providing free period products, securing 24-hour library access, and expanding welfare support, their impact has been immense. This category is non-nominated, with the winner chosen from the most exceptional nominations across all other awards.
