Managing homesickness

Featured newssasnews

Feeling homesick? No matter how much you enjoy student life, it is natural to miss your home, family and friends. The intensity of the Cambridge term can add to isolation and homesickness, especially if this is your first time away from home. Often a good way to overcome your feelings is to accept them and let yourself be homesick.

Here are some ways that could help you manage homesickness:

  • Socialise and get involved in extracurricular activities such as joining a society, or volunteering. We have hundreds of societies for you to get involved with so make sure to have a look.

  • Invite friends and or family to come visit you in Cambridge. If you are unable to go home it may be easier for people to visit you, you can show them some of your favourite spots around town e.g. local cafes, museums or punting (just be sure to wrap up warm). Make sure to check with your college prior about visitors as rules can vary between different colleges.

  • Reach out to a friend. You may find when talking to a friend that they are feeling similar to you which can help you feel less alone. If so, organise something fun to do together to keep your mind off things or be each other's listening ear.

  • Speak to the Student Advice Service, they provide a listening ear and can signpost you to any other services they think are relevant. You can book an appointment or attend one of their drop-ins from 12-2 pm every Thursday during term time.
