With less than a week until the end of Michaelmas term, you might be planning for your return home to spend the winter break with loved ones. While this would usually be an easy and joyful task, for some students, this year planning to return home might pose some questions and uncertainty, considering the second lockdown and the restrictions around travel and mixing with other households or social bubbles.
On 11th November the University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Stephen J Toope, shared with us all the latest guidance from the Department of Education for students who need to travel within the country or oversees during the holidays. Below, you can access the link to the statement: www.cam.ac.uk/coronavirus/news/update-from-the-vice-chancellor-33.
The guidance applies to undergraduate and postgraduate students on taught programmes. The University indicated that they are seeking clarifications from the government on guidance for research students and students on placements. According to this information, students were expected to have remained in their current residence until the end of the lockdown, 2nd December. Between 2nd and 9th December students will be allowed to travel home ‘on staggered dates to be agreed with students by the University and Colleges in collaboration with local public health bodies and transport companies.’. If you have any questions or concerns about making your travel arrangements, you could, in the first instance, contact your College Tutor or the Senior Tutor who might be able to help you. You could also contact our Advisors to ask any questions you might have or discuss your concerns. We can help you liaise with your College and the University to discuss your concerns and explore what options might be available to you.
Students who remain in Cambridge during the vacation can take part in activities their College, the University and CambridgeSU might plan for this year. As in every other year, the CambridgeSU is putting together a Winter Activities Guide with activities students can do during the winter vacation. As most of these activities will likely be online, all students whether in Cambridge or elsewhere, can access remotely. More details will be shared soon.
As Advisors our main role is to work with students and support them through their journey. We also work on various projects and this year we are focusing on developing resources for students to help them navigate some of their options even before meeting with an Advisor. We are pleased to share with you our latest information video on ‘Supervisor Issues’ developed by one of our Senior Advisors, Rachel Wilson. This video provides general information about supervisor issues for Postgraduate Research Students. Watch the video here.
We hope all goes well for all students returning home or to their loved ones. Any questions or concerns please reach out to us and we would be happy to help you. Here is how to contact us: phone 01223 746999, email advice@cambridgesu.co.uk, or fill in one of our contact forms.
