Motion for Sidney Mahjong Club

SSCSU Notes

? While the JCR has a variety of card and board games, there is no Mahjong set yet

? There has been significant interest amongst Sidney students in both playing, as well as picking up and learning the game of mahjong

? Fortnightly game nights to be held in the JCR, starting with a few ‘beginner-friendly’ nights for new learners looking to learn the game from scratch would accomplish these objectives

SSCSU Believes

? Would provide provide a healthy social activity for students to meet and befriend each other, regardless of what they study or which year they are in

? Would provide an avenue for stress-relief and relaxation, especially given the stressful nature of typical Cambridge life

? Would help international Asian students feel more comfortable and less homesick in holding activities that are familiar and reminiscent of home

? Would promote cultural exchange (and even language exchange), allowing students to share about their respective cultures

? Hones strategic and analytical skills in players in a stress-free environment, which might be helpful in tackling the academic challenges they face in their respective courses

o £100 to buy two full size mahjong sets

o £50 to buy three mini travel size mahjong sets

? On-Going Costs

o Additional £100 each year for snacks for the sessions
